Hi I’m Dr. Jay Patel
I am a board-certified psychiatrist (MD) with over a decade of experience helping individuals navigate complex mental health challenges across all stages of life. My training in Michigan exposed me to a broad spectrum of care, from child and adolescent psychiatry to geriatric mental health, shaping a comprehensive and adaptable approach to treatment. I have also received additional training in sleep medicine, which I integrate into my work to help patients restore one of the most essential foundations of overall wellness.
What drew me to psychiatry was not just the science, but the profound impact mental health has on a person’s quality of life. I saw how internal struggles like anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions could shape every aspect of someone’s day, and how meaningful it was when people finally felt supported, understood, and able to speak openly about what they were going through. Watching patients move from crisis to stability, and then toward a more sustainable, fulfilling and balanced life, has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career.
At the same time, my experience within larger healthcare systems revealed something that did not sit right with me. I often felt that both patients and providers were treated like numbers, with care sometimes shaped more by metrics, insurance demands, and productivity targets than by what a person truly needed. That experience started to weigh on me where I felt overwhelmed, could not find balance myself. To set a good example, I made a commitment to helping people by modeling through myself a system where balance is a center focus. I build a practice where care is human-centered, collaborative, and brought back focus to individuals in front of me.
My goal is simple but intentional. When we meet, my first objective is to determine whether we are a good fit. From there, our work is built on understanding the full picture of your mental health, not just checking boxes or prescribing based on surface-level symptoms. I believe psychiatry is both a science and an art. While evidence-based medicine provides the framework, every person brings a unique story, biology, and life context that requires a thoughtful and individualized approach.
Patients often tell me that working together feels different. They feel heard. They feel understood. They notice the time we spend exploring not just what is happening, but why it is happening. Many share that it is the first time they have felt truly listened to in a clinical setting. That matters to me, because meaningful progress starts with understanding.
Beyond my clinical work, I am someone who deeply values family, growth, and connection. I spend as much time as I can with my family and believe strongly in being present in those moments. I also have a passion for food and enjoy exploring new culinary experiences. Cooking is something I genuinely love, and I have often been told I could have taken a very different career path in that direction. I enjoy movies, music, and learning anything new. I believe knowledge is one of the most powerful tools we have, and I carry that mindset into both my work and my personal life.
At my core, I am someone who values perspective. I enjoy helping people see things from different angles, challenging assumptions, and finding meaning in experiences. Whether in the office or outside of it, I aim to be someone who is approachable, thoughtful, and easy to talk to.
If you are looking for a psychiatrist who will take the time to understand you, work collaboratively with you, and support you as you take an active role in your own growth, I would be honored to be part of your journey.
